Art in the Classroom

WHAT IS ART IN THE CLASSROOM?

  • Art In the Classroom (AIC) is a art history program that offers Washington School students a broad exposure to prominent works of art by a wide range of famous artists.
  • Parent/caregiver volunteers teach age appropriate lessons and engage students in a hands-on project.
  • Lesson plans and materials are provided for every artist so there’s no need to have a background in art or education!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

  1. Click here to sign up. Select your child’s class and sign up for any available artist/month.
  2. Reach out to your child’s teacher to secure a mutually agreed upon date to teach your lesson.
  3. Lesson plans are available on our website, but we strongly advise that volunteers visit the AIC closet in Washington to check for supplies ahead of the lesson date and email AICWashingtonElementary@gmail.com if any supplies are missing or running low. Please do not remove the lesson binders or any materials from the school.
  4. Volunteers must tell Ms. Mundy (a) the date and time they will be visiting the AIC closet and (b) the date and time they will be teaching their lesson.

HOW THE LESSON WORKS

  1. Use the provided lesson materials to teach the class background information about your artist and use the samples in the AIC closet to show students the artist’s notable works. Questions for discussion are included in the lesson.
  2. Each lesson culminates in a simple art project that allows the students to create their own piece reflective of the artist’s style.
  3. Lessons should take about 30-60 minutes to complete.
